Christine Gabardo, Co-Founder & CTO

Dr. Christine Gabardo is the Co-Founder and CTO of CERT Systems Inc. She received her B.Eng (’11) and PhD (’16) from McMaster University, then went on to complete an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto focused on developing efficient and scalable electrochemical CO2 reduction devices. In 2019, she co-founded CERT Systems Inc. and led the technical team in the finals of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition. She has published over 30 scientific articles in high impact journals in the field of CO2 electrocatalysis. She was recently recognized with the 2022 Clean50 Emerging Leader Award, the inaugural Engineering Young Alumni Leadership Award from McMaster University (2023), and as a Breakthrough Energy Innovator Fellow (Cohort 2).

20 million ton of virgin rubber is produced every year to make new tires. Circular Rubber Technologies converts the rubber in end of life industrial tires into a rubber reclaim that substitutes virgin rubber material. We provide tire manufacturers a high quality alternative to virgin rubber at significantly lower CO2 emissions and stable cost levels. CRT’s proprietary process is clean and produces a rubber reclaim with physical properties suitable for the use in tires with significantly higher properties than the competition. Our team combines decades of experience in rubber recycling, capital project management and venture backed scaleups. We have proven our concept and produced around 1,000 KG of rubber reclaim. We raised 0.5M USD earlier this year, which will be used to produce reclaim at commercial scale during the fall of 2021 and fully de-risk our technology. A significant portion of the production is pre-sold to several tire manufacturers.

MIMOSA Pro provides a proactive approach to skin health, allowing clinicians to implement earlier interventions, or even prevent them from being needed at all. Its genesis and development were driven from personal passion and circumstance.  As a surgeon, our co-founder, Dr. Karen Cross became frustrated at the limited help she could provide as a clinician to help her own Grandfather, living in rural Newfoundland, lost his leg and ultimately his life due to a lack of access to imaging technology to assess his leg. As a doctor, living in Toronto, Karen could do nothing to help her family to support her Grandfather. This experience emboldened her to change the health care system. She could not do this alone and joined forces with an imaging expert and colleague, Dr. General Leung, also a MIMOSA co-founder. This partnership delivered the MIMOSA Pro device. A growing body of research has also identified various patient-specific risk factors for prolonged opioid use after surgery. Adding to this need for better support for patients is the fact that health systems globally are working to do more of these procedures as outpatients to reduce hospital burden, leaving more patients to navigate their immediate postoperative pain themselves. Their vision is to leverage technology to better inform patients on postoperative pain management and put them truly at the centre of their care. They plan to build software that can over time, better understand opioid use by patients and give them a way to advocate for their pain management plans. They are building software that executes personalized pain management plans for knee and hip arthroplasty patients and their surgeons. It allows patients and surgeons to collaborate before surgery to suggest prescriptions that take a patient’s patient-specific factors and preferences into account, giving surgeons better information at the time of prescribing. It also helps patients manage their pain after surgery by offering a variety of functions including pain assessment reminders, medication compliance reminders, pain/medication tracking, opioid weaning plans, nonpharmacologic methods of pain control and troubleshooting features.

Dr. Christine Gabardo is the Co-Founder and CTO of CERT Systems Inc. She received her B.Eng (’11) and PhD (’16) from McMaster University, then went on to complete an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto focused on developing efficient and scalable electrochemical CO2 reduction devices. In 2019, she co-founded CERT Systems Inc. and led the technical team in the finals of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition. Adding photovoltaics to this real estate space can extend the range of a commercial EV by up to 25% and eliminate the secondary diesel engine that drives the cooling compressor on the refrigerated trailer. Mino Care, formally known as Mommy Monitor Incorporated has been rebranded to reflect the community that we serve and the ideals that we represent. Mino is a term in the Fon Language (Niger-Congo language) that was used to describe the Dahomey Amazons. The Dahomey Amazons were an all female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey (modern day Benin). Examples of the Dahomey Amazons can be found more recently in films like Black Panther or the Woman King. These warriors protected their king and their community and the term Mino was a name they were called, which means  “Our Mothers”. Research shows patients struggle with their post-operative medication regimes and have valid concerns about the use of opioids which can affect their outcomes after surgery. A growing body of research has also identified various patient-specific risk factors for prolonged opioid use after surgery. Adding to this need for better support for patients is the fact that health systems globally are working to do more of these procedures as outpatients to reduce hospital burden, leaving more patients to navigate their immediate postoperative pain themselves. Their vision is to leverage technology to better inform patients on postoperative pain management and put them truly at the centre of their care. They plan to build software that can over time, better understand opioid use by patients and give them a way to advocate for their pain management plans. They are building software that executes personalized pain management plans for knee and hip arthroplasty patients and their surgeons. It allows patients and surgeons to collaborate before surgery to suggest prescriptions that take a patient’s patient-specific factors and preferences into account, giving surgeons better information at the time of prescribing. Women’s Global Health Innovations was founded by Leisa Hirtz in to address the lack of sustainable, accessible products available to those experiencing period poverty in the most vulnerable communities. Years were spent in the field interviewing girls and young women in refugee settlements in Uganda and slums in Kenya, trying to understand what the most important obstacles to true freedom are while bleeding during a menstrual cycle.
