did you know hair can clean up oil spills? impact spotlight: hair matters

Woman Smiling in a crowd

At Spring, we are passionate about highlighting impact businesses that are making waves in their respective fields. Today, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on the Hair Matters program, a truly innovative initiative that is making a tangible difference in environmental restoration efforts.

The Genesis of Hair Matters

Hair Matters, formerly known as Clean Wave, is a program spearheaded by Matter of Trust, founded by Lisa Gautier. The genesis of this remarkable program traces back to 1999 when Lisa Gautier partnered with Phil McCrory, a hair stylist and inventor from Alabama. Inspired by the devastating Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, Phil realized the potential of hair fibers in soaking up oil spills. Thus, Hair Matters was born.

Repurposing Resources

The premise of Hair Matters is simple yet incredibly effective: they collect hair, fur, wool, fleece, and other natural fibers from individuals, salons, groomers, farmers, and more. Instead of letting these materials go to waste, they repurpose them into felted mats that are specifically designed to absorb petrochemicals in waterways.

Beyond Pollution Cleanup

But Hair Matters isn’t just about cleaning up pollution; it’s about so much more. By diverting useful fibers from the waste stream, they’re tackling environmental issues at the source. Moreover, they provide recycling education and create green jobs, contributing to the circular economy while empowering communities.

Sustainable Solutions

Whether it’s oil spills, leaky vehicles, chemical runoff, or accidents, petrochemicals find their way into our waterways far too often. Hair Matters’ felted mats offer a sustainable solution to this pressing problem. These mats are not only sturdy and durable but also hydrophobic, ensuring they can withstand various environmental conditions and continue to effectively absorb pollutants.

Vision for Tomorrow

What’s truly inspiring about Hair Matters is its vision for the future. By 2030, they aim to have 300 satellite partners around the world, further expanding their impact and reach. They’re not just addressing a current environmental issue; they’re building a global network of changemakers committed to a healthier planet.
