What is Gender Lens Investing?

Gender Lens investing, also known as “gender-smart” investing is an approach that takes gender-based issues into consideration in investment decisions. Being a gender-smart investor means investing in companies that are committed to:

  • Being owned and led by women
  • Creating and maintaining a gender-inclusive value chain
  • Ensuring their operations do no harm to women
  • Developing a gender-diverse and equitable workforce
  • Designing products or services that consider the distinct needs of women as a consumer segment

What You’ll Learn

This program is open to Atlantic Canada investors of any gender who are curious about gender lens investing. Topics that will be covered include:

  1. ESGs & GL Investing – Exploring the intersectionality of gender-lens investing and ESG initiatives to support stronger and more equitable investment practices and decision making.
  2. Startup Founder & Team -Women and women-identifying startup founders sharing insights related to the support and roadblocks encountered on their capital-raising journey. This is an opportunity for the investors to brainstorm and identify practices and frameworks to mitigate barriers and challenges for future founders they invest in.
  3. Gender Lens Education – How to better educate founders and investors on GL practices and which channels and methods have proven to be effective thus far in the investors’ GL investing journey.
  4. Community – Relationship building and how to foster deeper investor community connections focused on gender-lens investing and diverse founders.
  5. Data Collection & Analysis – How to collect better data and utilize it to inform gender lens investing decisions and education opportunities.
  6. Social Impact – Exploring the social impact of gender-lens investing. Are our efforts truly moving the dial towards more equitable investment opportunities for BIPOC, women, women-identifying and non-binary founders?

The intake survey we provide once the cohort is selected will determine which topics above we prioritize and which ones will be supporting topics to ensure alignment with the investor cohort and their interests.

“Venture capital is a historically difficult industry to break into. The lack of diversity that exists within the ecosystem creates an even higher barrier for minorities and individuals with non-traditional backgrounds. The most important thing we can do for our network is create the conditions for them to gain meaningful experiences, drive relevant opportunities and develop their own strategy for startup investing.”
